Now You Know

A full moon on Halloween is extremely rare, only occuring 3-4 times a century. Though a common trope in horror movies and in Halloween decorations, there hasn't been a full moon on Halloween since 2001 (for Central + Pacific time zones). Before that there wasn't a Halloween full moon for all time zones since 1944!

But guess what -
this year, 31st October 2020
we'll be seeing a full moon!

Halloween costumes original came from Celtic tradition. People believed that ghosts roamed the earth on Halloween, with the barrier between worlds at its thinnest - and that wearing a disguise would lend protection from evil forces.

Samhainophobia is the medical term for a pathological fear of Halloween.

Made You Think

In UK folklore, black cats were traditionally seen as omens of good luck - but unfortunately many still consider these gorgeous little black panthers to be signs of bad luck.

Between 2015 and 2017 the RSPCA reported that on average it took 30 days to rehome a black cat. This is in comparison to an average of 23 days for tabbies, and 19 days for ginger cats.

The RSPCA also reported in 2014 that 70% of the cats in their care were black, or black and white. It has been suggested that it may be because people consider them 'boring', 'less eye catching', or maybe even less photogenic.

Wtf?!

Cats Protection in the UK has designated October 27th as National Black Cat Day - so let's remember to celebrate our little black panther friends this coming Tuesday, and give them the extra love that they deserve!

Make Something

For today's make we have some Spooky Halloween Cookies lined up!

These treats are of course vegan, as well as being flour free and super low calorie! And you won't believe the main ingredient!

Original recipe by nutritioninthekitch.com
Difficulty: A little bit of effort
Time to make: About 30 mins - 1 hour (if you need to prepare the black beans in advance, this will add extra time! Please prepare them according to the instructions on the packet)

You need:
2 cups cooked Black Beans
2 tbsp coconut oil

2 tbsp almond / peanut butter
1/4 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1/4 cup cacao powder (unsweetened)
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Optional: Dairy-free choc chips for topping

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven at 180℃ / 350℉.
2. Line a baking sheet with parchment or grease a large tray.
3. Rinse the cooked beans with cold water and drain.
4. Add the beans to a food processor or mixer, along with the coconut oil, nut butter, and almond milk.
5. Blend until smooth.
6. Sift the coconut sugar, cacao powder, baking powder, and salt, and add to the bean mixture. Mix until well combined.
7. Spoon the batter onto the prepared baking tray into 12 even dollops. (I spooned them into a round cookie cutter and removed, to help them form neat round shapes)
8. Bake for about 20 minutes.
9. The cookies should be nice and soft when they come out of the oven - now is the time to push your optional choc chips or other toppings into the top of the cookies!
10. Serve, and enjoy!

This is how my turned out. I KNOW, they don't look as appetising, but they are so good!

Simmer Down Stove Top Recipe

A large saucepan filled with water
Vanilla extract / vanilla pod
Star Anise
Cinnamon Sticks

How to:
1. Bring your saucepan of water to the boil.
2. Add all ingredients.
3. Allow to boil for about 5 minutes, and then turn down the heat so the pan simmers.
4. Top up the water regularly so that the pan is always at least half filled.
5. Enjoy!

REMEMBER to turn off the heat at night and to keep a close eye on the water levels!
