Now You Know
In Greek mythology, autumn began when Persephone was abducted by Hades to be the Queen of the Underworld. In distress Persephone's mother, Demeter (the goddess of the harvest), caused all the crops on Earth to die until her daughter was allowed to return, marking spring.

Made You Think
In a little over
30 years
Londoners will swelter in the Summer much like Barcelona does today.
Edinburgh's climate will resemble Paris's. Cardiff will align with the conditions currently common in Montevideo, Uruguay. Barcelona will experience the aridity of Adelaide. Madrid will feel like Marrakesh. And Milan, like Dallas, Texas. *Source: National Geographic
We now know that man-made climate change is real and that it poses a great threat to the planet and its inhabitants. Current data suggests that we need to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in the developed countries by at least 80% by 2050 in order to have a chance of staying below an average temperature rise of over 2c.
And factory farming is a major player in climate change.
Factory Farming Basics
- Produces huge amounts of greenhouse gases
- Uses a lot of energy, to both rear animals and produce the food that they consume
- Pollutes the environment
- Lots of farm animals = lots of waste
- Uses lots of resources - land, plant material, and water, to name just a few
So what small changes can we make to play our own individual part in reducing the impact of this industry on our home?
1. If you can, go vegetarian or vegan.
These things don't have to be important just from a welfare standpoint, although this is good enough in itself. Reducing your consumption of animal products lessens the demand on factory farming.
2. Reduce your consumption of meat, dairy, and eggs.
Meat and dairy production use huge amounts of cereals and soya grown for animal feed. These use the most precious global resource - water.
'Dr Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said, "Please eat less meat. Meat is a very carbon-intensive commodity."'
3. Choose high welfare products
Higher welfare products cause less animal suffering. Buying them will encourage investment in higher welfare farming which is smaller scale and poses fewer risks to animals, people, and the planet.
Click here for a resource called 'The Compassionate Food Guide' which provides useful advice on reading labels and choosing more sustainable products in the supermarket. Read it yourself, and encourage your friends and family to as well.
