Fox Facts

Welcome to the enchanting world of foxes, where cunning elegance meets untamed beauty.

  • Scientific name: Vulpes vulpes
  • Natural habitats include hedgerow, woodlands, meadows

Foxes are canines
Foxes belong to the Canidae family, which includes domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes, and jackals. They are highly adaptable creatures, inhabiting diverse environments across the globe, from forests and grasslands to deserts and urban areas.

Hunters
Foxes are known for their exceptional hunting skills. They possess sharp senses, including excellent eyesight and hearing, allowing them to locate prey with precision. They even use the earths magnetic field to hunt! Their agile movements and lightning-fast reflexes make them formidable predators.

Sleepyheads
Foxes are primarily nocturnal, preferring to hunt and explore during the cover of night. However, some fox species, such as the Arctic fox, adjust their schedules to the 24-hour daylight of their Arctic homes.

Foxy Personalities
These cunning canines exhibit a wide range of behaviors and have distinct personalities. Most foxes are solitary, only staying in groups with their mother while they are young, but they do form intricate family structures and exhibit cooperative behaviors. Groups of foxes are called 'Skulks'.

In the family
Foxes are typically monogamous, loyal, and mate for life. They will mate in Winter, and give birth between March and May. Vixens are pregnant for around 50-60 days, and usually only give birth once a year.

Scents
A bit like cats, foxes have scent glands on their paws, allowing them to leave their unique scent on the ground as they roam. This scent marking serves as a means of communication and helps them navigate their territories.

Fur
The striking beauty of a fox lies in its luxurious fur. Most foxes possess dense and fluffy fur, providing insulation during harsh weather conditions. The coloration of their fur varies across species, from the fiery red hues of the red fox, creamy brown coats of the desert Fennex fox, and the snowy white coats of the Arctic fox.

Fox diet
Foxes have a diverse diet, adapting to the available food sources in their habitats (hence the rise of the Urban fox). They are omnivorous and consume a range of foods, including small mammals, birds, insects, fruits, and even leftovers scavenged from human settlements.

The fox tail
A fox's tail, known as a brush, serves various purposes. Beyond its visual appeal, the tail helps the fox balance while leaping, acts as a cozy blanket during chilly nights, and communicates their mood and intentions to other foxes. Their tails can be over half the length of their body!

Urban foxes
Foxes have proven to be highly adaptable to urban environments. They have thrived in cities, making use of green spaces and adapting their diet to include the plentiful food waste of humans. Their ability to coexist with humans showcases their remarkable versatility.

Folklore
Foxes have always been prominent figures in folklore and mythology around the world. They often symbolize cunning, intelligence, and transformation. Our Fox treasures were inspired by one such folktale, the myth of the Irish River Goddess Sionna.

Throughout creating this collection we have celebrated the alluring charm of foxes and draw inspiration from their elegance, stories, and personalities. After reading these facts, why wouldn't you want to wear this beautiful creature loud and proud!
